Welsh entrepreneurs Philip and Lakshmy Pengelly won a £10,000 investment for their foldaway ‘FlipTop’ care home table on TV hit show Dragons’ Den.
The couple, who have been running a dementia care home for four years, won the backing of ‘dragon’ Sara Davies MBE on Sunday’s episode.
The pair said they were “speechless and chuffed” after winning over Sara in return for a 25% stake in the business. Sara beat off a rival bid from fellow dragon Touker Sulleyman who wanted a 35% stake for his investment.
With its foldaway aircraft-style design, the patent-pending product provides a safer, more easily storable and hygienic alternative to the existing over arm chair table found in care homes.
In making her offer, Sara revealed the couple’s pitch had “hit a bit of a sweet spot” for her as her grandmother lives in a dementia care home.
The dragon said she was “really impressed” at the Welsh couple’s “passion and ambition”, adding: “I will make the business happen overnight and help you take it to new levels. It’s a wonderful business and a great idea.”
Lakshmy added: “We chose Sara because of the way she spoke about dementia care. You could see that passion was embedded in her heart just like it is in ours.”
