Specialist care group CEO welcomes NMC chief’s praise of social care nurses

Johann van Zyl, CEO of specialist care group, Cornerstone Healthcare, (pictured) has welcomed NMC CEO Andrea Sutcliffe’s praise of social care nurses.

Speaking at the Care England Workforce Matters conference last week, Andrea highlighted the “vital contribution” made by nurses in social care.

Johann said:  “We were delighted to see such acknowledgement of the value of nurses in social care by Ms Sutcliffe.  As Chief Executive and Registrar at the NMC, and formerly Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the CQC, her comments carry significant weight which should be taken notice of.

“As a specialist care provider whose services care for adults with neuro-degenerative conditions and an underlying mental health diagnosis, our nurses are highly skilled.  They care for those that other service providers have struggled to offer a permanent home to, and their professional talents and personal approach are highly respected and valued by us and the families we support.”

The head of Cornerstone Healthcare also noted the Andrea’s encouragement of closer co-operation between care providers and NHS Trusts.

“Perhaps it is time that we allow our nurses to work across facilities from time to time,” Johann said.

“Our nurses would certainly benefit from understanding how the wards that are most likely to admit our residents, operate.  The opposite is also likely to be true as I am sure nurses from acute trusts will understand the challenges private specialist providers face on a daily basis.”

Cornerstone Healthcare has recently been accredited by Bournemouth University to assist in the training and mentoring of trainee nurses in its Kitnocks House service, near Botley in Hampshire, and provides the same service to Hertfordshire University and the Southampton Local Mental Health Team.

“We trust this exposure for NHS staff will begin to dispel the myth of nurses in a care home environment being ‘second class’ to their counterparts in hospital settings,” Johann said.

“We provide an environment where our nurses have the opportunity to develop their careers and expand their knowledge through the training we offer, while working alongside a supportive multi-disciplinary team and in conjunction with the acute NHS Trusts.

“This is the only way private sector operators and the NHS will be able to attract nursing staff looking for a challenge in a variety of different fields.  We have recently established an in-house recruitment role to communicate to nurses that adult social care can give them that varied, stimulating and rewarding career.”
