Prestwick Care parent group signs strategic partnership with local NHS Trust

NTW Chief Executive John Lawlor with Malhotra Group PLC chairman Meenu Malhotra 3

Newcastle-based Malhotra Group has signed a partnership agreement with its regional NHS Foundation Trust that is designed to improve outcomes for elderly people living in the North East of England.

Malhotra Group is the parent company of Prestwick Care, which operates 11 homes with 565 beds, mainly in the Newcastle area. The group also runs restaurants and hotels in the region.

The partnership with Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW), the North East’s mental health and disability care provider, will enable them both to share their knowledge and experience in estates management, property redevelopment and accommodation needs to help deliver enhanced health and social care solutions in the region.

“We very much believe in the benefits of private and public sector collaboration,” says Meenu Malhotra, the group’s chairman. “We hope that, by entering into this alliance with NTW, we can share our expertise and experience to help bring further benefit to elderly and vulnerable people within the region.”

Mr Malhotra’s brother, Bunty Malhotra, told Care Home Professional last month that it was vital for the care home industry to work closely with the NHS, but the business needs money to immediately follow patients from hospitals to the care homes into which they are discharged. “It is abhorrent that we have to fight to recoup funding for these most vulnerable people after we have cared for them,” he said.

The Strategic Alliance does not specifically address how each hospital patient or care home resident is funded, but it does aim to increase cooperation with a shared outcome of improving outcomes. : “Our vision is to improve the wellbeing of everyone we serve through delivering services that match the best in the world. We hope that by entering into agreements such as this one with others we can share best practice and by doing so help improve the lives of local people through our services, said John Lawlor, chief executive of the NTW Foundation Trust. “With the signing of this innovative agreement with the Malhotra Group we are hoping to share expertise and, together, benefit those we care for.”
