Charlotte Wilson (pictured with home gardener Lukasz Kazanowski), Home Manager of Colten Care’s Outstanding-rated Canford Chase in Poole, Dorset, talks to us.
How did you join Colten Care?
I’ve been here since June 2012. I was working locally for another provider and was aware of the great reputation that Canford Chase already had for delivering a high quality service. I was ready to make the transition into a bigger, more supportive organisation so I applied for the role knowing that leading the team at Canford Chase would be a fantastic opportunity for me and an altogether nicer place to work!! That’s exactly what I’ve found.
What is special about Colten Care?
It’s the people – those you care for and those you work alongside. I really enjoy being with residents old and new and getting to know their families too. Residents and families are at the heart of everything we do. At the same time, I have never worked anywhere with such a fabulous team as we have here. Everyone is so supportive, both at the home and at our head office. It really is a One Team approach here. All colleagues live and breathe our company values and being a family-led company, this directly influences the way we care for our residents.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
The smiles on people’s faces when we’ve done a good job and knowing we have got it right. Of course there is sadness when we lose a resident but even then you can take a measure of comfort knowing you have done your best for them and led the team in ensuring individual choices have been respected. It’s always rewarding to have residents and families recognise Canford Chase as a nice place to live in and visit. It’s what we strive for – a lively environment full of laughter, fun and energy.
What has been your proudest moment?
Hearing at the end of last year that we had been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. It was wonderful to have such external recognition that we are delivering the highest level of care. I am also proud that two Canford Chase staff won awards at the in-house Colten Champions awards this year. Both Healthcare Assistant Abner Saclayan and Clinical Lead Theresa Sales richly deserved their awards and are integral to the team and the service we collectively offer.
What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?
We underwent a complete 18-month refurbishment involving every room in the home. It was a very testing time. At first residents and families were concerned about how it would go. We got through it thanks to an excellent relationship with the building team working alongside us. We managed to keep the home running, with everyone safe and spirits up.
Tell us three things you need to provide great care?
Firstly, a skilled, competent and motivated team. Then, you need to strive to be one team with one goal, so everyone is going in the right direction. And, last but not least, have a good sense of humour. That’s vital to complement your compassion and understanding and see you through any tough days.
How do you relax?
Cycling, sailing, going on holiday, and spending precious time with my grandchildren.
