A £10m plan to convert an historic Whitley Bay hotel into a care home has been submitted by Malhotra Group.
Under the plans the Victorian Rex Hotel would be transformed into an 83-bed home with dining, leisure, treatment, admin and support facilities.
A group spokesman told the Newcastle Chronicle: “We are very excited about this project, which will cost in excess of £10m.
“Whitley Bay is undergoing a large-scale re-development and we are delighted to be part of that by creating an 83-bedroom, state-of-the-art care home, in the former Rex Hotel.
“The home will be part of our platinum range – which also includes our highly successful Melton House care home at Gosforth – and will provide specialist nursing care within superb facilities.”
The home, which would accommodate young people with disabilities as well as elderly people living with dementia, would create 30 jobs.
North-east based group Malhotra operates 12 care homes under the Prestwick Care brand, including its flagship Melton House dementia care home in Gosforth (see EXCLUSIVE: First look inside Prestwick Care’s Platinum Range Gosforth home).
