‘Internal street’ to bring more choice to dementia residents

Dementia Residents Given More Choice – Internal Street (002)

An innovative care home extension is to provide more choice to residents living with dementia.

Designed by JHD Architects, the scheme will add 16 dementia friendly residential care rooms to family-owned Hevercourt Care Home near Gravesend.

Planning consent for the scheme, which was recently granted, means the project, which also includes ‘dementia friendly courtyards’, will be ready to welcome residents in 18 months’ time.

The ‘internal street’ has been designed as the main circulation space running through the home, providing a place for residents to sit, meet and chat with other residents, staff and family.

Residents will also have unrestricted access to dementia friendly, safe and secure internal courtyards that let sunlight and daylight into the heart of the home and provide views outside.

The courtyards also promote ‘inside/outside’ living by enabling residents to go outside whenever they wish to sit on a bench or interact with the gardens.

Play equipment for visiting children and age appropriate outdoor exercise equipment will also be incorporated into the design.

The new rooms, which have been designed for people living with dementia, can also be adapted for hospital after care, and include en-suite shower rooms.
