If you are running a care home, your employees are probably the most important part of your business. They are fundamental to keeping your residents cared for and happy and your systems running smoothly.
So how can you keep them motivated? Here we discuss the different ways that you can adapt your business so that the employees working at your care home will continue to be motivated at what they do and will, hopefully, enjoy working for you for years to come.
First and foremost, you need to make sure that your employees are working in safe and hygienic conditions. Your employees can’t properly function in an environment that is not clean and sanitary. If you want any chance at having a motivated staff, you will need to make sure that the conditions in which they are working are up to par.
Another important factor that has to be addressed is the number of employees that you have. It is imperative to your staff’s well-being that you have enough employees to cover the work.
Hiring too few people will have a lot of unwanted consequences. Your residents will not get the care that they need, and your staff will end up exhausted and not able to carry out their duties.
Your staff should also have sufficient sick leave and annual leave available to them and time and space where they can go for their breaks during the day.
Once these basics are covered, it’s important to remember that the people that work for you have goals for their careers, the same as you have goals for your business. Aligning these goals is a great way to make sure that you achieve a win-win scenario.
Keeping your staff motivated will often come down to giving them ways to advance in their role. If some of your employees stand out, you should promote them to management, or you could move them horizontally into a different role that is more in line with their goals.
Giving your employees career options within your business will help you to retain staff. Consider upskilling your staff by sending them on training courses or workshops. This is important in a sector that relies on a caring and skilled staff for success.
Creating a sense of team will help to have your staff feel supported. You should think about having team meetings and getting all of your staff involved in brainstorming strategies and solutions.
You will be able to get the most important ideas from your staff because they will be able to give you a clear idea of what is and isn’t working in the day to day tasks of the care home.
You need to show your employees that they are valued. Recognise when they have achieved something and give them positive feedback. Carers can feel underappreciated for the important work that they do so it is vital that you show them how much you respect them and the work that they do.
The only way to really know what it is that your staff need is to communicate with them. Find out what they need in order to do their job and what it is that they want out of their employment with you.
You also need to be clear about your own expectations. Set clearly defined goals and the way that you see the team getting there. These goals can be laid out in your team meetings.
