A Surrey based care home operator is pioneering the use of a rapid COVID-19 antibody test that provides results within 10 minutes.

The Geoghegan Group has introduced the MEDsan rapid antibody test at The Clavadel, a post-operative and rehabilitation centre in Guildford.

Group director, Charles Geoghegan, told CHP: “We temporarily closed The Clavadel after hospital operations were paused during the pandemic. When we reopened the home at the beginning of June we decided that we would want to ideally test all of our staff. When I was told about MEDsan it seemed to provide the answer to what we were looking for.”

The simple finger prick test, which is manufactured in Germany, offers a less intrusive and faster solution to the current swab tests used in care homes and is significantly faster than the government’s recently announced 90-minute rapid tests.

“It seemed to just tick the bosses,” Charles told CHP. “It was quick and easy and we could do it on site and we didn’t have to send anyone away.

“I have been able to immediately test any staff member who didn’t feel well or had a high temperature when they came into work. We can also test patients who are coming from hospital.”

Charles, who runs two elderly care homes as well as his rehab facility, said he would consider introducing the solution throughout his services in the event the government fails to deliver on its promise of regular testing by September.
