Applewood care home, part of the Milkwood Group, has celebrated achieving a CQC Outstanding rating.
The home in Bramley near Reading achieved Outstanding ratings for being Effective, Caring and Responsive, and Good for being Safe and Well-led.
Care home manager Laura Hulett told Care Home Professional: “It’s amazing. I was quite shocked when I heard the news. We work so hard but this is something I never thought we would actually achieve.
“I knew we would be good but to get Outstanding is the cherry on top. The secret is about building up a really good team and this takes time. Everybody has to share the same vision from the kitchen staff to the cleaners and of course the carers.”
The CQC, which carried out an inspection on Applewood on 4 and 5 May, praised Ms Hulett for her commitment and passion for staff training and development.
The inspectors’ report added: “The use of activities as a life enriching experience was understood by all the staff at Applewood.
“All staff, not just those involved in the delivery of care, participated to ensure people were fulfilled and had an active and interesting life which promoted their independence. Staff were highly motivated to develop close relationships with the people they were supporting.
Applewood’s 45 strong staff provide residential and dementia care for around 40 residents. Milkwood Group owns seven care homes in Hampshire, Monmouthshire, Chepstow and Powys.
