EU REFERENDUM DEBATE: HC-One chairman warns Brexit would impact care

Chai Patel HC-One

HC-One’s executive chairman has written to each of the company’s 14,000 employees warning of the risks of voting to leave the EU.

Chai Patel, who runs the UK’s fourth largest care home group of 208 homes and around 11,000 beds, has told staff he would not presume to tell them which way to vote, but he did feel it is his duty to explain the risks.

“HC-One has relied on the work of colleagues from around the world, including Europe, to provide the kind and professional services we are proud of,” Patel said.

He added that a vote for Brexit risked “the care we deliver, the livelihoods of our colleagues and the company’s future”.

“The care sector has gone through a period of very serious reduction in local authority spending. Britain leaving the EU could have a profound effect on our national economy and in turn on public spending. The care sector would struggle to absorb another cut in spending,” Mr Patel warned.
