Derby looks to shift five council-run care homes into the private sector

Derby City Council is privatising five care homes and three day care centres because it cannot afford the multi-million pound capital investment required to bring the services up to modern standards.

Local newspaper The Derby Telegraph has been following developments, and reports today that carers and families have submitted concerns via consultation forum that standards could decline.

The homes slated for sale to private operators are Merrill House, Coleridge House, Arboretum House, Raynesway View, Bramblebrook House.

The care homes and day centres employ around 240 employees, all of which are on the council payroll.

The council says that there has been considerable interest from private operators that are already active in Derby.
