CQC shares care home innovations in response to COVID-19 challenges

Care homes are among 300 front line examples published by the CQC of how operators are innovating and adapting working practice to respond to challenges posed by COVID-19.

The short examples celebrate the dedication and resourcefulness of health and care providers and their staff.

CQC Chief Executive Ian Trenholm (pictured) said: “These examples illustrate the tremendous resilience and imagination of health and care providers and their teams. They demonstrate the determination to think differently to meet the needs of people who use services and keep people safe in a time of crisis.

“We are sharing these so providers can quickly learn from each other about what they can do now and consider whether innovations brought about by a crisis could help shape services in the future.”

The CQC cites examples where technology alone is not always the answer to keeping residents and relatives in touch as in the case of Mill House where relatives have come to the care home’s window while on the telephone to residents.

Other examples of communication innovation include: Horizon Healthcare Homes’ weekly newsletter to relatives in a personalised postcard format; Sandford House which highlights good examples of people’s recovery and community kindness; Valerie Manor Nursing and Residential Care Home which arranges Skype calls between residents and families; and Mill House Nursing Home which has set up a relatives/friends WhatsApp group.

In well-being examples, the CQC cites Rusthall Lodge, which is live streaming exercise and entertainment to residents; Birtley House which is holding ‘virtual physio’ sessions; and a member of staff from Riverside, Laurel Court who is Skyping residents to chat and play games while self-isolating.

Innovations in infection control include: Highland House, which has installed a sink in its entrance hall; staff at Maplehurst Nursing Home who wear different coloured T-shirts depending upon which area of the home they work in; and Swillbrook House which has made a video of staff showing how to put on and take off PPE to songs ‘Get it on’ by Marvin Gaye and ‘You can leave your hat on’ by Tom Jones.

On information and guidance, the CQC highlighted Christadelphian Care Homes which has created and issued 22 guidance documents on subjects including use of PPE and end of life care, and Valerie Manor that held a stakeholder day to discuss what they were doing about COVID-19.

Sandford House was again highlighted for safe staffing and supporting its staff by providing a safe transport service to and from work.
