CQC fails to find an Outstanding care home during 241 Central and North inspections

The Care Quality Commission published a total of 241 reports on the quality of adult social care services in the Central and North regions, with not a single care home achieving the highest Outstanding rating.

The only Outstanding rating among any of the 241 reports was for Partners in Support, a Hertfordshire-based specialist in care for autism.

Since March 1, the CQC has published a total of 689 reports on adult social care in the Central region. The number of Outstanding care homes is zero, leading care home professionals to question the usefulness of a system where the top rating seems unachievable.

Ralph Holland, proprietor of Oakhaven Residental Care Home in Cheltenham said to Care Home Professional: “What is the purpose of a classification when the likelihood of living near an Outstanding provider is virtually nil?
I think some tough questions need to be put to Anrdea Sutcliffe to justify to the public what the Commission think they are doing, because I believe that the Commission are failing the public with a meaningless classification with the way things stand at the moment.”

Oakhaven was rated as Good following an inspection in May last year, even though it was rated Outstanding for care and the CQC report summary was overwhelmingly positive about all other aspects of care and support in the home. Click here to read the report.

In the North, CQC inspectors rated 62 out of 97 operators as Good, 31 as Requires Improvement, four as Inadequate.

Among the 144 reports for operators in the Central region, 102 care homes and homecare agencies were rated as Good, 39 were rated as Requires Improvement, two have been rated Inadequate and one, Partners in Support has been rated Outstanding.
