Close Care Homes has won an appeal for planning permission to convert a care home in Somerton, Somerset, into an extra care facility.

Work is expected to begin this year on the redevelopment of the vacant site to create an estate with a mixture of one- and two-bedroom care units that help older people to live independent lives while accessing shared services and amenities.

Following the granting of planning permission, a spokesperson for the Stepping Stone Group said: “We are delighted that our application has now been approved, although we are disappointed at the lengthy process and unnecessary costs incurred.

“We will now begin work on the proposed Construction Management Plan in consultation with the residents of Pesters Lane, Wessex Rise, and our other neighbours together with the local planning authority.

“We hope that work on the new building will start at the end of this year and be completed by the spring of 2018.”
