Care home with ‘multiple medicines incidents’ rated Inadequate

Cherry Garth

A Buckinghamshire care home where inspectors found “multiple medicines incidents” has been rated Inadequate by the CQC.

Cherry Garth care home, which is operated by The Fremantle Trust, provides residential care for up to 60 people.

The CQC said: “People were not protected against avoidable harm. Medicines management was inadequate, and there were multiple medicines incidents.”

Inspectors found that “not enough staff were deployed on some shifts” and infection prevention and control was “unsatisfactory”.

Actions to detect, investigate and report allegations of abuse or neglect were found to be “insufficient” with adults at risk not effectively safeguarded.

Relatives were critical of the culture at the home with one commenting: “If I could have moved [the person] I would, because of the management failures, but it’s not possible now and so we have to make the best of it.”

Another said there was a “total lack of communication” on a one-to-one basis.

A spokesperson for The Fremantle Trust said: “We are very sorry that the quality of care at the home has fallen below the high standards we set ourselves. We are taking the feedback from the CQC very seriously and the wellbeing of our residents is our highest priority.

“As a Trust we have reviewed the summary of the findings from the CQC together with the recommendations made to us and have implemented a robust action plan to improve care quality at Cherry Garth.

“This is being monitored very closely by our senior management team and we are already seeing significant improvements in the quality of care. We are working closely with all relevant authorities and we are confident that by the time of our next inspection, the CQC will be able to see significant improvements.”
