Free hot meals are being offered to the wider community this winter by an enterprising West Yorkshire care home.

Meridian Healthcare’s August Court in Garforth is providing free lunches to local elderly people.

Home administrator Kim Morris said: “We want to welcome older members of the community into our home, as well as offer them a home cooked, fresh hot meal. We host many community events at Augustus Court and are always looking for opportunities to open our doors to new guests.”

The initiative is designed to strengthen the home’s links with the local community while helping combat loneliness. Age UK figures show 1.2 million older people in England are chronically lonely.

Meridian Healthcare offers residential, nursing, dementia, end of life, day, respite and end of life care. The care provider was acquired by HC-One in 2015.

The business has care homes in the North West, West Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

August Court, which provides nursing, personal and dementia care, is Meridian Healthcare’s seventh premiere care home and was opened in 2016.

Its facilities include a hair and beauty salon and gym. Each bedroom is fitted with a walk in wet room.
