Bupa is on the brink of offloading one of its most troublesome divisions in a move that could affect its plans to sell hundreds of care homes.
Sky News is reporting that Celesio, a German healthcare giant, is in talks to buy Bupa Home Healthcare, which takes care of around 30,000 UK elderly residents in their homes.
In October last year, Bupa was reportedly ready to sell up to 200 care homes as it grapples to improve its finances in the face of a local authority spending squeeze.
Sky News quoted sources suggesting that a deal for Bupa Home Healthcare could be wrapped up within weeks, expanding Celesio’s presence in the UK and providing Bupa with an exit from one of its most troublesome businesses.
The care at home operation has been affected by public funding cuts, forcing Bupa to write down the value of the business by more than £30m in 2014.
