The number of COVID-19 related deaths in care homes has again fallen sharply, according to the ONS.
In its latest weekly update covering the week ending 12 March, the ONS said care home COVID-related deaths were down by more than a third to 249, representing the sixth weekly decline from the peak of almost 2,000 deaths at the height of the second wave in January.
On a cumulative basis, there were 31,533 COVID related deaths in care homes in England and Wales up to 12 March.
Deaths involving COVID-19 in care homes accounted for 12.5% of deaths down from 17.4% in the week earlier.
The CQC reported 28,810 notifications of COVID related care home deaths in England between 10 April 2020 and 19 March 2021. Of these, 97 were notified in the week ending 19 March.
Care Inspectorate Wales reported 1,911 deaths of residents in care homes involving COVID-19 between 1 March 2020 and 12 March 2021.
