The number of COVID-related care home deaths in England and Wales have fallen for the first time in six weeks.
In its latest update, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) recorded 1,726 deaths involving COVID-19 in the week ending February 5. This is down by 245 on the previous week.
In the weeks following December 25, when there were 530 COVID-19-related deaths recorded in care homes, deaths have increased every week up until January 29.
On a year to date basis, there were 28,406 COVID-related deaths recorded in care homes up to February 5.
CQC data shows that there were 27,214 deaths of residents involving COVID-19 in care homes in England between 10 April 2020 and 12 February 2021.
Of these, 893 were notified in the week up to February 12, down from 1,365 the previous week.
Care Inspectorate Wales reported 1,709 deaths of care home residents involving COVID-19 between 1 March 2020 and 29 January 2021.
