BREAKING NEWS: Care home COVID-19 deaths continue to fall in October

Care home COVID-19 related deaths have fallen for the fourth consecutive week since mid-September, according to the latest ONS figures.

In its latest weekly update, the ONS recorded 68 COVID related deaths in care homes in England and Wales in the week ending 8 October, down from 71 in the previous week.

COVID-related deaths accounted for 3.1% of all deaths in care homes, down from 3.5% in the previous week.

The further small decline in deaths came amidst a surge in care home cases in the wider community.

New COVID cases in England rose to just over 39,000 on 18 October, up on a seven-day average of just under 37,000, with levels at their highest since mid-July.

Overall deaths in the community in England remain relatively low, however, at 22 on 18 October, down on a seven-day average of 91.

There were 53 notifications of deaths involving COVID-19 recorded in care homes in England by the CQC in the week ending 15 October, up on 52 in the previous week.
