Another Lothian nursing home reports COVID-19 outbreak

Heatherfield

Heatherfield Nursing Home in Armadale, West Lothian has been closed to visitors following a coronavirus outbreak.

The news follows significant outbreaks at two other care homes in the Lothian area: HC-One’s Redmill Care Home in West Lothian and Renaissance Care’s Milford House in Edinburgh.

A spokesperson for Heatherfield care home, which is operated by Holmes Care Group, said: “I can confirm that there has been a small COVID-19 outbreak within the care home. In line with Scottish Government guidance, the home is now closed to new admissions and non-essential visits, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to contain the spread.

“All affected team members are now self-isolating in line with Government guidance, and the one affected resident is being cared for in isolation. All other residents have now been tested and we continue to monitor their health closely.

“We continue to do everything in our power to safeguard residents and the team who so diligently care for them. This includes following all Scottish Government and Health Protection Scotland advice in relation to infection prevention and control.”

NHS Lothian’s incident management team is providing support at the home.

Dr Duncan McCormick, consultant in Public Health Medicine, NHS Lothian, and chair of the Incident Management Team (IMT), said: “NHS Lothian’s Health Protection team is working closely with Heatherfield Nursing Home following a small number of positive COVID-19 cases.

“The care home responded immediately following identification of the first case, closing the home to visitors, and arranging for whole home testing to be carried out as soon possible. This is in addition to routine weekly staff testing.

“Enhanced infection prevention and control measures, including cleaning and PPE are in place, in line with national guidance.

“Relatives of residents have been notified and the multi-disciplinary IMT continues to assess the situation and decide any required next steps.

“To respect and maintain patient confidentiality, no further details will be released.”
