Gavin O’Hare Connolly, COO, Runwood Homes
It’s been a busy 12 months for Gavin as he has introduced a number of initiatives that have set high standards of best practice and resident focused operating homes at Runwood Homes. This has included: embedding the ‘Yellow Ribbon Scheme’ end of life care initiative based on inclusive planning and ensuring residents needs are met; the ‘Forget Me Not’ scheme which provides engagement, meaningful activity; and share experiences for residents who are bed bound; a pioneering wellbeing strategy which has entailed transitioning activity co-ordinators in newly created wellbeing lead roles; and successfully partnering with non-invasive airway clearance device provider LifeVac. An award winning nurse by background, Gavin’s ethos of investing in his workforce has cemented his positon as an influential Nurse Leader in the eyes of his peers, won him admiration and the loyalty of the care and nursing teams whom he has helped.
Paul Newman, CEO, Greensleeves Care
Since joining Greensleeves Care as Chief Executive in 2013, Paul has led a strategy of sustainable growth through a planned programme of acquisitions and developments. As a result, Greensleeves Care has diversified its services and doubled the number of older people it supports. Quality Improvement lies at the heart of Greensleeves Care’s success and the provider has won numerous coveted awards during Paul’s time at the helm. This year, Greensleeves Care received a Top 20 Large Care Provider award from carehome.co.uk and two of its homes, Borovere and Torkington House, were rated the UK’s number one and number three care homes nationally in the independent Your Care Rating survey. In 2015, Paul established the in-house Greensleeves Centre for Quality and Innovation to drive continuous improvement and service innovation. Innovation is not just restricted to care services. Greensleeves Care successfully issued the first ever care sector retail charity bond, raising £50 million on the London Stock Exchange in less than a week. Outside Greensleeves Care, Paul makes a broader contribution to the UK’s care sector. He is Chairman of the UK Standards Committee on Ageing Societies, developing British and global standards to support older people, as well as representing the UK overseas.
Lorna Badrick, COO, TLC Group
Having joined TLC in 2017 as HR Director with over 21 years’ experience, Lorna very quickly was promoted to COO, leading through people and achieving inspirational culture change. Under Lorna’s leadership, TLC has enjoyed a stellar 18 months racking up a number of achievements, including: achieving an agency free culture; being awarded ‘good’ CQC ratings in all homes and TLC’s first ‘outstanding’ KLOE; ISO9001 accreditation across all homes and the support office; Hospitality Assured accreditation across five homes, winning three national awards; scooping Chef of the Year in the Cost Sector Catering Awards and finishing third in the NACC Chef of the Year Final; increased occupancy across all homes; and reducing team member turnover to below the sector average. Having been tasked by TLC’s CEO with the objective of achieving IIP Silver in 2018 – Lorna involved everyone on this journey and in November 2018 TLC achieved Investors in People Gold in its first assessment. Lorna leads with ambition, drive, passion and warmth, advocating a culture whereby TLC’s people come first – she believes that if team members are happy, valued, engaged and developed then residents will receive the best possible care and the business will achieve its objectives.
Paul Courtney, Director of Development, Southern Healthcare
Paul designed the transformational culture change programme that has resulted in Southern Healthcare’s remarkable record of achieving ‘outstanding’ in all four of its nursing homes. The programme covers both operational and inspirational elements, focuses on the lived experience for those living with dementia, the mealtime experience, the environment both inside and outside, leadership development, team development, external benchmarks and a strategy for implementation across the group, including a team to drive transformational change. Having achieved ‘outstanding in 15 of 20 Key Lines of Enquiry and positive staff engagement at 98%, the plaudits for Southern Healthcare have come thick and fast. The provider has been a finalist in 60 local and national award categories, including: Best Team at this year’s National Care Awards and Best Dementia Garden and Best Dementia Interior at the National Dementia Awards. National independent auditors have described Southern Healthcare’s dementia care as pioneering, at the vanguard of dementia care and pushing at the boundaries of what a nursing home can offer.
Mala Agarwal, Managing Director, Athena Care Homes
Mala is a well-known member of the healthcare circle who has a passion for not only her residents and team but also for thinking outside the box and trying new things to make a difference. The Athena Vision is: ‘Creating opportunities together by caring to be different’. Mala is an active part of the panel arranging the Care Sector Ball. She won Asian Business Woman of the year at the Asian Business Awards in March 2019 and also launched the Care Society with other key people in the care sector. Mala also plays a huge part in Women in Healthcare and its events. She was also nominated as one to watch at the most recent Health Investor Power 50 event. Under Mala’s leadership, Athena eradicated agency carer usage in the year to August 2019 and reduced nurse agency usage to a few shifts a week. A full benefits, rewards, discounts and communication hub for 640 team members called Careport was launched in August 2019 and Athena has introduced comprehensive leadership training from the top down to ensure the whole team are singing from the same song sheet. The business has, furthermore, gone from strength to strength, reaching 32% growth across the group end of year accounts despite taking on an unviable home in January with two homes in Kings Lynn regularly delivering EBITDAR of 40%.
