Richard has been responsible for delivering what is widely recognised as the largest new build programme in the care home sector over the past five years. He leads the team that has opened 36 new homes creating 2,670 new care home places since 2013, and is on track to deliver a further 19 new homes by the end of 2020. Once opened, these homes will add an extra 1,300 places to Care UK’s 7,400 strong inventory.
Richard played a key role in devising and delivering the company’s ground-breaking partnership with Suffolk County Council (SCC). This involved a five year programme which began with Care UK taking on 16 largely obsolete homes and day centres from SCC and then investing £80m to replace them with 10 purpose built facilities. This expanded the council’s capacity to meet the demand for care home places from people requiring nursing care and those with dementia and also provided additional opportunities for residents from across the county who self-fund their own support. The development programme was completed on schedule in January 2016 and its success has received national recognition.
In addition, Richard leads Care UK’s commercial contract team which continues to secure new partnerships with the NHS and local authorities across the country and which remains one of the most active partners of the public sector in the provision of care home places.
His team is also responsible for managing the physical building structures and providing facility management services for over 100 care homes including a rolling programme of refurbishment. In the last 18 months this has included a significant programme of capital investment to update the buildings, bring expansionary opportunities and create additional facilities such as better bathrooms to deliver improved quality of care.
