Elaine, a registered nurse with an MBA, has worked in care for more than 30 years.
The last 15 have been in older persons’ care with the last four at Colten Care, where she has led a focused programme – ‘All About Me’- designed to put the resident at the centre of all care delivery and actions. She spearheaded a review of the company values and, in collaboration with staff teams, the new values of ‘kind, friendly, individual, reassuring and honest’ were born. More than 70% of residents agree the values, which were designed to support the company’s vision of making a positive difference to how residents are supported, are understood and are part of the everyday culture.
Under Elaine’s leadership, Colten achieve three Outstanding ratings from the CQC in the past year. All 20 homes are now either Outstanding or Good. At the same time, independent reviews on Carehome.co.uk give Colten a group-wide rating of 9.8, one of the highest in the UK for providers of its size. Staff from all the homes were invited to share in Elaine’s success at the inaugural Colten Champions awards in April 2018. Individuals and teams were nominated for their excellence in care with winners and finalists recognised at an awards ceremony.
Elaine also introduced an annual Dementia Utopia day, where nurses and other colleagues discuss how to help people live well with the condition, and a Clinical Excellence Day for broader sharing of best practice in clinical care among nurses.
