Leading the regulating the UK’s 13,000 registered care homes is a big ask but CQC Andrea Sutcliffe has risen to the challenge since becoming chief inspector of adult social care in October 2013.
Andrea is vastly experienced in the industry having managed a range of services including those for children and older people over 30 years.
You have to a have a tough skin to be an industry regulator and Andrea has had to take her fair share of criticism of a ratings system that has seen just one in 200 qualify as Outstanding.
Undaunted, Andrea has been a staunch defender of CQC’s rating system arguing that it was important to set the bar high for operators. She has also been a strong proponent of a focus on person centred care arguing that larger care homes have often been too focused on the care environment.
Since her appointment, Andrea has also been given the uphill task of leading negotiations over how care operators will take over paying for the CQC’s £249 million annual budget by 2018.
