Care recruitment specialist Bright Selection shares how it has helped nursing and residential care provider Excel Care achieve Outstanding.
At Bright Selection we are privileged to work exclusively with Excel Care, an established and reputable provider of 32 nursing and residential care in the South East. As a provider they have had two homes achieve overall Outstanding rating in the last six months and 79% of their homes are rated Good and above pending outcomes of recent inspections.
Pauline Manning, HR and Recruitment Manager for Excel Care shared that the route to an Outstanding rating for both homes had been in providing evidence that they were delivering above and beyond to meet each individual resident’s needs. Providing truly person centred care required clear documentation of assessment of individual need, resident and family engagement and review.
Both homes have been supported by a strong and established regional support team and received support on providing meaningful activities and ensuring carers through to management understand each residents needs and how best to meet that need. This is also a creative process for the care team presenting new challenges in how to deliver something new that is right for that person.
The group have also successfully gained Gold Standards Framework recognition across a number of their homes with others actively working towards accreditation, which supports and underpins an overall evidence based approach to care delivering.
Bright Selection are pleased to be responsible for sourcing and appointment of one of the Home Managers who joined the group as a Care Manager in 2013 seeking professional development and the opportunity to progress her management career. In moving to Home Manager she has taken the home from Good to an overall Outstanding this year.
Excel Care are delighted that their teams have achieved 79% Good or above CQC rating and remain focussed on achieving outstanding outcomes for all their residents across their homes and in learning from the homes that they have developed new robust internal audit systems that provides the home manager and their team with a detailed report on provision and recommendations for improvements.
The reports are incredibly detailed which mean that they can be reassured that they are both delivering for residents and family. Promoting and sharing best practice across the group.
We are often asked by our clients to source Home Managers with a track record in managing Good or Outstanding homes, so when speaking to managers at this level we look to understand how they as managers believe outstanding can be achieved. As it’s clear that whilst the right manager, with the right skill set is important, there are other factors that can help providers achieve Outstanding.
- In House Development – ensure that there are development programmes and career pathways for internal employees. Many of the best managers have grown up professionally with an employer and are longstanding employees when they take on their first management role.
- Systems and Processes – have systems and processes in place that are underpinned by evidence based research and enable quick sharing of best practice for all
- Resource – managers and their teams need the right resources, this means that training systems need to be in place, HR, quality support teams and appropriate finance for improvements
- Recognition – Company awards and incentives and the commitment to achieving external awards and accreditations rates highly on employee engagement and loyalty.
- Recruitment – Recruit with a long term view, consider every appointment as important from nurse upwards they impact on the culture of the home and are the home managers of the future.
