Greensleeves Care, working in partnership with Dementia UK, has recruited Steve Mason as its first Admiral Nurse.
Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses who give much-needed practical and emotional support to family carers, as well as the person with dementia.
They offer support to families throughout their experience of dementia that is tailored to their individual needs and challenges.
They provide the knowledge to understand the condition and its effects, the skills and tools to improve communication, and provide emotional and psychological support to help family carers and care home staff carry on caring for the family member.
Specialist interventions and support such as that provided by Admiral Nurses can make a positive difference to the quality of life of both the person living with dementia and also that of their families and supporters.
Steve has worked as an Admiral Nurse in both the NHS and in the not-for-profit care sector for almost nine years.
During this time, he has supported numerous families and individuals affected by dementia and seen first-hand, the devastation both in practical day to day living but also in terms of emotional and psychological distress that a diagnosis of dementia can bring.
In his role, Steve will not only support the care home managed by Greensleeves Care, but he will also spend one day a week supporting people with dementia and their families living in the community.
