BEST PRACTICE IN CARE: NHG puts care at the heart of home design

Cedar View, a new build residential Care Centre run by LRH-Homes, offers the latest support services in dementia and palliative care thanks to the assistance and expertise of NHG’s team for care consumables, environment and equipment.

The state-of-the-art four storey care home on the outskirts of Croydon, South London, provides the highest level of care for up to 65 elderly residents with a range of conditions starting with residential care for up to 20 people on the ground floor; 23 beds for people with more acute nursing and dementia care needs on the first floor, and advanced dementia with palliative care on the top floor for 22 people.

Each floor has a lounge and dining area for residents living in en-suite bedrooms and suites with kitchenette facilities. There is also a library, bar, bistro, hair and beauty salon, home cinema and sweet shop for residents.
Care home supplier NHG was brought on board to provide a total fit-out solution that drew on each of the company’s specialist teams including Care Consumables, Care Environment and Care Equipment.

NHG was given the task of creating a modern care environment that set the client apart from the market. The company was required to provide a meticulously thought out interior design, furniture and equipment specification, with the aim of enhancing patient experience and making life easier for the care team.

Creating and maintaining the right environment is an ongoing challenge that spans many elements of care home life. For Cedar View, this was no exception, especially as the design not only needed to meet the high expectations of residents, but also cater for specific care needs such as nursing and dementia and palliative care. Understanding the client’s specific requirements and corporate goals was therefore critical, as was the early collaboration with the wider build team.

With the help of NHG’s specialist teams, a bespoke design solution was created that not only factored in all equipment, but also optimised the space for the best return on investment. This tangible solution has helped deliver maximum return on investment, whilst staying true to LRH-Home’s ethos.

Key considerations for the NHG team included ensuring they created the right environment for residents across each of the three floors. In particular, it was essential to create a strong dementia setting that was homely, appropriate for its function and easy for residents to identify rooms and find their
way around.

In line with the Stirling principles, the design was based on science, not just style. The key to creating the right environment was about balancing the aesthetics with ease of use and accessibility. It was also focussed on making sure the needs of the patient were met – physical, psychological, social and spiritual.

Due to NHG’s early collaboration in the project, the team was able to review the architect’s drawings and recommend small modifications to the build. This included dividing up the proposed dining and living spaces to help residents get away from noise and stress, especially as residents with a hearing impairment can find certain sounds frustrating and overly loud.

Flexible room dividers, which are also used to display colourful-framed artwork, were used to create a more personal and homely environment and help residents feel more settled.
With each of the floors accommodating specific resident needs it was also important to incorporate a degree of consistency into the design, should residents, in time, be required to move from the residential care floor to the nursing and dementia care floor.

Six main standard bedroom designs were therefore created and two bedroom suite schemes. Each of the three floors also has its own pharmacy which features consistent colour, seating and signage.

NHG created and installed specialist signage throughout the centre. The signs are designed and positioned to help residents identify any room’s purpose without needing memory.

Furniture design was another essential aspect in creating the right environment and the NHG team specified items that had been specifically designed to help people with dementia feel more relaxed and at home. For example, all of the chairs feature contrast piping so that residents can clearly define the shape and see the edges. This helpful, visual impact enables residents to feel more independent. Furthermore the flooring contrasts with the furniture to allow patients to easily identify between the two.
The bedrooms have specially made curtains with a plain leading edge. This design feature makes it easier for residents to open and close the curtains as they can see the central meeting point

Making life more interesting and rewarding is a key principal of good care home design. The Centre includes a fully functional ‘curiosity-themed’ sweet shop that has nostalgic interchangeable shop fronts creating a ‘memory lane’ street scene. Located in the basement, the memory lane includes cobble effect carpeted edging. Features such as this, which relate to residents’ memories, are a proven way to help them feel more at ease and can help residents familiarise themselves with their environment

Each of the 65 bedrooms includes NHG’s Steiss beds from the Steiss Contemporary range. To assist mobility, these electric profiling beds provide all the associated benefits, including increased patient independence, faster recovery from illness and a high level of safety. However, a key feature is their contemporary design with décor side skirt and a customised upholstered, vinyl headboard to match each of the room’s interiors and therefore make the bed less clinical.

With Cedar View welcoming its first residents, NHG is providing the home with a host of care consumables including nursing and medical supplies, catering, housekeeping, cleaning and hygiene products.

Eliminating the manual paper work involved in purchasing and paying invoices, Cedar View is able to benefit from NHG Touch – a free, purpose built online ordering service that is tailored to LRH-Homes needs. The system not only speeds up the ordering process, it also includes detailed reporting and analysis to help inform strategic buying.

Overall, the partnership between LRH-Homes and the NHG team of designers and installers has delivered a home that provides an exceptional care experience for both residents and staff.
