ASSA ABLOY offers key to care home security

Ass Abloy

ASSA ABLOY’s wireless SMARTair™ keyless security systems provide a 21st century solution to keeping care home residents safe and secure.

SMARTair™ wireless devices provide the easiest upgrade and replacement for mechanical locks — and are just as easy to retrofit to existing premises as install from scratch. Swapping existing locks for battery-powered cylinders or escutcheons with integrated card readers is easy. It instantly links a door to the admin software, freeing care managers from key hassles and upgrading resident security.

With SMARTair™, lost keys are no longer a security risk. Using a PC or smartphone, it takes a few seconds to issue or revoke a key-card, wristband or whatever programmable credential residents use to open doors. There’s no need to change locks when a key goes missing. SMARTair™ offers audit trails and real-time monitoring.

It’s also easy to expand. An installation can start small, with a limited budget, then grow later.

Thomas Schulz, marketing and communications director of ASSA ABLOY, said: “Care homes are a security paradox. A residence must feel open and welcoming, a pleasant environment to greet family and visitors. A home, in every sense. Yet managers must ensure site security, keeping staff, sensitive data and medicines safe from unauthorised access. If residents have dementia or another complex condition, it’s crucial care workers can locate them at any time.

“That’s why advanced, real-time access control — that’s easy for everyone to use — has major benefits. And not just for security: modern access control can also slash the time wasted on key management.”

SMARTair™ is already deployed across Europe, including Pamplona’s 500-resident Casa de la Misericordia.

“In a residence like ours it is critical to have real-time management that allows us to interact with a door at any time,” explained facility manager, Ernesto Serra.

“A wireless solution that allows us to install access control without wiring up the buildings was a big advantage.”

Dagmargården is a state-of-the-art home in Skanderborg, Denmark. Doors have wireless SMARTair™ escutcheons and wall readers, keeping security managers updated about security status in real time.

“SMARTairTM provides the possibility to tailor the system exactly to our needs,” explained Ole Høi Sørensen at the local housing cooperative.

“It is practical in daily life, and we can see who has been where and when. We do not have a problem with lost keys anymore.”

Dagmargården residents are issued with a tag which automatically opens their apartment door: they don’t need to turn a handle, or even to push.

Les Résidences Notre-Dame, in Geneva, has also switched to SMARTair™. Because SMARTair™ supports individually tailored authorisations, every user has access only to appropriate areas. Medical staff can enter rooms and storerooms, but residents’ credentials only open the door to their own room and common areas. Even technology novices can work the system without difficulty.

Care homes can have both simplicity and security, with a SMARTair™ system that saves staff time, eliminates key hassles and makes residents safer.
