2018 LEADERS IN CARE: LEADERS OF TOMORROW: ROGER CATCHPOLE AND RUTH FRENCH, STOW HEALTHCARE

Turning around failing elderly care settings and creating vibrant community hubs that act as beacons for quality care is how Stow Healthcare is making its name.  Roger and Ruth had no background in care seven years ago, but felt this was to their advantage – they had no preconceptions about what nursing care should be like, they just knew what we wanted it to be like.

Their homes have become outstanding providers in their local area, supported by great staff, engaged healthcare professionals and creative community interaction.  Stow Healthcare’s ambition is to develop a collection of boutique care homes across East Anglia that are renowned for their quality and as beacons of outstanding practice.

Since April 2017, Roger and Ruth have added two further homes to their portfolio; both failed homes, with low resident numbers, vast unrealised potential and staff who were demoralised and poorly trained.  They have increased the occupancy of the first home by nearly 170% (with private fee paying residents), achieved almost full recruitment, thereby reducing agency bills and increased standards to a point where an Outstanding rating has become a feasible prospect (the home has been inspected and is awaiting its rating).

Roger and Ruth supported the second home on a management contract for six months prior to acquisition, stepping in when it was about to be closed down. The turnaround of the home has been staggering.  Staff morale is extremely high – Stow Healthcare’s recent staff survey revealed massive increases in satisfaction levels and in 9 areas out of 14, they achieved 100% satisfaction from staff.
