2018 LEADERS IN CARE: CARE QUALITY AND COMPLIANCE: JOANNE BALMER, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF CARE AND QUALITY, SUNRISE SENIOR LIVING UK AND GRACEWELL HEALTHCARE

Joanne Balmer is responsible for all Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare communities and homes delivering care at the highest standard and maintaining consistent compliance success. 

Joanne joined Sunrise in September 2014, becoming senior director of care & quality after a year. In this role, she oversees governance, regulation and quality improvement, and ensures that Sunrise communities exceed CQC requirements.

As at June 2018, 100% of all inspected Gracewell homes, and 96% of all Sunrise communities, have been rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC. Sunrise UK has three Outstanding communities: Sunrise of Southbourne, Sunrise of Sonning and Sunrise of Winchester; Gracewell has two: Gracewell of Maids Moreton and Gracewell of Camberley.

Joanne says: “We continually evaluate our standards and always strive for improvement. We never rest on our laurels, and know there is always an aspect of our care that can be strengthened. Such high standards are not only set from the top – we give all team members responsibility to innovate and enhance the quality of care.”

Joanne has recently introduced a number of different technological innovations to enhance relationship centred care. For example, the operator’s CareConnect platform provides an electronic health care system, which tracks individual resident care plans to ensure they receive the very best care and support. Sunrise is also introducing new technology to help protect residents from falls, and enhance the quality of dementia care, among other innovations.
