During a 30-year career in health and social care, Dr Chai Patel has led and advised some of the largest care providers in the UK. Dr Patel is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, has been a member of government task forces for older people and for better regulation, and has received an Honorary Doctorate from the Open University.
Alongside his working life, Dr Patel’s family foundation, the Bright Future Trust, is an active supporter of a wide range of organisations enabling young people to fulfil their potential and overcome challenges.
As Acting CEO of HC-One, one of the UK’s largest care home operators, Dr Patel this year oversaw the appointment of property agent CBRE and investment bank Gleacher Shacklock to manage the sale of more than 70 homes for an estimated £300 million to reduce company debt.
He was a vocal opponent of Brexit, warning that leaving the EU would risk “the care we deliver, the livelihoods of our colleagues and the company’s future” and was also one of the industry leaders to write to former Chancellor George Osborne warning that rising costs as a result of the National Living Wage could force many care home operators out of business.
HC-One highlights this year, include the opening of a new 58-bed, £5.7 million home in Garforth, Leeds by former news presenter Angela Rippon. The business was also one of five care home groups showcasing initiatives they are working on to improve social care on an online community hub created by Care England and Nursing Times.
